Overview

Provides administrative and pharmaceutical services to the patients, physician staff and hospital staff in accordance with all regulatory requirements under the supervision of a pharmacist.

Responsibilities
  • Maintains knowledge of, and complies with, all relevant laws, regulations and policies, procedures and standards
  • Actively participates in creating and implementing improvements to achieve clinical, satisfaction and/or efficiency outcomes
  • Prepares sterile products (both non-hazardous and hazardous) using appropriate aseptic technique while adhering to USP 797 requirements. Performs bulk compounding and packaging duties to ensure an uninterrupted supply of medications while adhering to USP 795 for non-sterile products and USP 797 for sterile products requirements and MN Board of Pharmacy rules
  • Performs dispensing responsibilities in an accurate and timely manner while adhering to departmental policies and procedures and regulatory agencies (e.g., MN Board of Pharmacy, Joint Commission, CMS) under the guidance of a pharmacist. Routinely monitors all elements of the department and often identifies and resolves problems, errors, and opportunities to improve care
  • Fills and labels new medication orders accurately and within department time standards
  • Accurately fills and exchanges patient medication drawers. Performs automated dispensing cabinet restocking duties to ensure the quality and appropriate quantity of medications are stocked
  • Provides drug education to physicians, nurses, pharmacy staff and other hospital staff and patients to enhance drug information and promote rational drug therapy under the guidance of a pharmacist. Researches drug information questions, evaluates the literature, formulates and presents relevant information verbally or in writing within established time frames
  • Understands and demonstrates the concepts of providing pharmacy clinical services under the guidance of a pharmacist. Interprets and evaluates physician orders, monitors drug therapy concurrently for appropriateness, allergies, incompatibilities, adverse drug reactions and recognizes opportunities for clinical intervention. Recommends changes following discussion with the pharmacist preceptor. Assists in medication use evaluations and completes responsibilities accurately within the required time frame
Qualifications
  • Currently enrolled in an accredited college of pharmacy and successful completion of the first year of the program
  • Registered with the Minnesota Board of Pharmacy as an intern
  • Hospital pharmacy experience preferred
  • Analytical Thinking: Ability to Identify issues, obtain relevant information, relate and compare data from different sources, and identify alternative solutions
  • Attention to Detail: Achieves thoroughness and accuracy when accomplishing a task
  • Computer Skills Basic: Ability to use a computer and applications that are associated with performing basic work tasks (use a mouse, navigate in Windows, Outlook, etc)
  • Critical Thinking: Gathers and integrates critical information, recognizing and addressing underlying assumptions of others, to arrive at effective solutions; breaks down problems into simple tasks or activities; analyzes relationships among several parts of a situation
  • Interpersonal Communication: Skilled in developing effective rapport with customers, co-workers, or families, actively listening to develop a positive connection
  • Problem Solving: Identifies problems; determines accuracy and relevance of information; utilizes appropriate tools and staff resources along with sound judgment to generate and evaluate alternatives, and to make recommendations
