The Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), part of the State University of New York and an internationally renowned college of art, design, business and technology with a strong emphasis on liberal arts, invites applications for a Residential Education Coordinator in the Residential Life Department. FIT Residential Life houses approximately 2,300 undergraduate students living within four residence halls comprised of traditional and apartment style housing.
The Assistant Residential Education Coordinator (AREC) is a part-time, twelve-month, live-in professional staff position responsible for assisting with the leadership and supervision of a residence hall housing approximately 300-500 residents. Reporting to the Residential Education Coordinator, Assistant Residential Education Coordinators help to ensure the effective operation of a residence hall and serve as an active and visible Residential Life staff member. ARECs assist with educational and community-building initiatives within a residence hall through supervision of staff, enacting community standards procedures, and serving on an on-call duty rotation. ARECs are also instrumental in contributing to the success of Residential Life and the FIT Division of Student Success through department-wide and campus activities including move in/out, student leadership retreats, summer housing, departmental committees, assessment, and more. ARECs perform other duties as assigned are expected to contribute to a positive, team-oriented, energetic, and flexible work atmosphere.
Primary Job Responsibilities & Duties
- Supervise and evaluate paraprofessional staff members on a regular basis, including providing guidance, feedback, and professional development through weekly staff meetings, one-on-one meetings, and staff evaluations
- Oversee staff performance/progress outlined by the residential curriculum and assist in continued assessment and development of the curriculum
- Facilitate staff development, foster staff unity and teamwork, motivate student staff and empower them to promote student learning and development
- Assist with the selection and training of student staff members
- Coordinate department processes within assigned area, including hall openings and closings and health and safety inspections
- Assist with managing building and committee budgets with adherence to College purchasing guidelines
- Assist with monthly reports related to residence hall operations, student and staff progress, and curriculum implementation
- Serve on departmental committees and provide assistance with that assigned area
- Work to advance the College, Division of Student Success, and Residential Life's strategic plan and goals through participation in goal setting, program implementation, committee/task force work and assessment efforts
- Attend various meetings on a weekly/biweekly basis including, but not limited to: Residential Life staff meetings, professional development sessions, building staff meetings, committee meetings, and weekly meetings with students and supervisors
- Assist with the housing selection process for new and returning students as needed
- Participate in departmental, divisional, and college-wide trainings and professional development workshops
- Maintain clear, consistent communication with department and college staff on a variety of topics, ensuring a timely response to concerns, exceptional support of students and a commitment to the college, division and department missions
- Perform all other duties as assigned
Community Standards and Student Support
- Develop relationships with individual students and within the campus community, creating an atmosphere conducive to students' academic success and personal growth
- Role model appropriate behavior, personal integrity, and responsible conduct both on and off campus
- Maintain close communication and positive relationships with residents, students, and staff
- Communicate, interpret and enforce department and college standards and policies
- Ensure staff members are appropriately confronting and documenting behavioral issues and concerns
- Respond and process alleged policy violations as reported by staff, students, Public Safety, or community members with adherence to departmental and College processes
- Maintain due process and a learning-centered philosophy when sanctioning and engaging in the conduct process
Emergency and Crisis Response
- Take part in a 24/7 on-call duty rotation and oversee the implementation of duty and crisis response protocols
- Effectively respond to emergency situations and assist in resolving resident and facilities concerns and needs
- Serve as a liaison with Public Safety, Health Services, Counseling Center, Dean of Students Office, Title IX and Affirmative Action staff, and emergency personnel
- Share responsibility in maintaining health, fire, and safety standards
- Serve as a Campus Security Authority and assist in reporting incident information as needed
- Serve as a responsible employee for allegations regulated under Title IX
- Bachelor's degree and at least one year of prior experience in a college residential setting required
- Additional prior experience in residence life, student leadership, programming, student government, orientation, community service, or related experiences strongly preferred
- Work towards a Master's degree in Higher Education or a related field is strongly preferred
- Understanding of student development philosophy, residence hall management and ability to work with a diverse student and staff population
- Demonstrated leadership abilities, organizational skills, and excellent skills in oral and written communications
- Strong interpersonal skills required. Demonstrated ability to communicate professionally and effectively in both written and verbal form with a variety of stakeholders including, but not limited to, students, faculty, staff, and parents.
- Excellent supervisory, teamwork, conflict resolution, project management, and organizational skills
- Ability to work effectively and positively in an environment characterized by change, including the ability to acquire new knowledge and utilize that information to develop new programs and services
- Capacity to work in a 24-hour/7 day environment with the ability to quickly respond to and handle situations for the entire residential campus
- A genuine interest and satisfaction in working with students, families, faculty, and staff and in supporting the mission of higher education and student affairs
- This is a part-time (20 hours/week) temporary, 12-month appointment subject to one-year reappointment renewable annually, not expected to exceed three years. In exceptional cases, reappointment may be granted for a fourth year.
- ARECs will keep regular office hours, which are scheduled on a semesterly basis. Evening and weekend commitments will be required to fulfill duties of the position. During peak times, ARECs are expected to work beyond 20 hours/week and are compensated for the additional hours.
- While serving on-call, ARECs will remain within close proximity to the campus. ARECs are expected to serve on call during holidays, weekends, and evenings as needed to ensure 24/7 coverage, in addition to their 20 hours/week of work.
- ARECs are expected to make their on-campus apartment their primary residence.
- This position is considered to be an essential personnel position for the department, and as such, ARECs may be required to report to work/remain at work even if classes are cancelled, and/or the campus is working on limited operations in an emergency.
- ARECs may serve in one or more residence halls during their time in the position and may be reassigned due to departmental or college needs.
- Hourly wage of $22.92/hr
- Furnished, studio apartment, which includes all utilities, cable, and internet located on campus
- Small contribution to declining balance through the College's dining plan
