Research in the Biology Department at Brookhaven National Laboratory seeks to unravel and fully describe the complexities of biological systems-from how plants make oils and other products to the role of proteins in disease. Our work helps to develop and makes use of the tools and techniques of biochemistry, molecular genetics, and structural biology. Our research makes important contributions to fulfilling the missions of the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Basic Energy Sciences and Office of Biological and Environmental Research. In addition, together with the Collider-Accelerator Department, the Biology Department manages the NASA Space Radiation Laboratory (NSRL) at Brookhaven, which is used by radiobiologists and physicists to study the effects of space radiation on both living and non-living systems with the aim of protecting future astronauts.

The Biology Department has a unique opportunity for a Laboratory Operations Support Assistant. The successful candidate will work directly with a diverse and international community and will be responsible for a variety of Biology Department support functions including, inventory and procurement of standard laboratory supplies and materials. In this diverse role, you will also serve as the Property Liaison and the Technical Representative with coordination and oversight of service contracts. The ideal candidate will have technical knowledge of biology laboratory operations (e.g. supplies, equipment, contracts), be an excellent communicator, team player and be highly organized and motivated to keep up with the needs and deadlines of the research programs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the Procurement Liaison including the processing of procurement requests via web requisition, credit card or other procurement avenue and proactively tracking all procurements to closure.
  • Serve as Technical Representative for shared departmental equipment maintenance and service contracts (e.g. balances, laminar flow hoods).
  • Maintain consumable supplies and materials for research laboratories, which includes physical inventory/condition inspections.
  • Serve as the Property Representative.
  • Participate in the development of procedural improvements and problem resolution as needed.
  • Stay abreast of policy/process changes in functional areas and advise accordingly.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Contemporary training in biology or related field including general knowledge of specialized biochemistry and molecular biology laboratory supplies and equipment.
  • Six (6) years of full-time, contemporary, related experience which provides evidence of the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to successfully perform the duties of the position (A bachelor's degree in a Biology or a relevant business field with coursework, or training, specifically related to the position requirements may offset qualifying experience on a basis of 2:1 (experience:college) years.
  • Computing proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and PeopleSoft HR/PeopleSoft Financials, or similar Human Resource/Financial Management systems.
  • Ability to establish positive working relationships at all levels throughout the organization.
  • Flexible team player who is able to interact with staff to accomplish objectives and resolve issues.
  • Ability to prioritize and effectively deal with often competing deadlines.
  • Ability to identify and resolve problems within own area of responsibility.
  • Ability to identify organizational resources and seek assistance when needed.
  • Clear and concise oral and written communication skills.
  • Must be attentive to details, self-motivated, resourceful and organized, taking ownership of all assigned work.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge or ability to learn SharePoint.
  • Previous Lab support experience.
  • Knowledge of federal procurement regulations.
