Job Description

The Department of Economics at Columbia University invites applications for a full-time predoctoral fellow at the rank of Staff Associate II from June 1, 2024, to May 31, 2025, to work with a faculty member of the Department of Economics at Columbia University. The projects will chiefly focus on academic research related to international trade, macro, finance, and development.

The initial appointment is for one year, with renewal for a second year based on satisfactory performance and funding availability. The position will be based at Columbia University in New York City. The predoctoral fellow will work under the close supervision of a faculty member. The staff associate will be assigned a variety of tasks that provide preparation for graduate school, such as computer programming in multiple languages, analyzing data, developing statistical models, creating presentations, and editing research papers. Candidates will be expected to manage undergraduate research assistants and draft data appendices. The Staff Associate II will interact regularly with professors and their co-authors. The position is designed to be a bridge between college and graduate school for students interested in economics. Salary will be competitive.


Applicants should be completing (or have completed) a Bachelor's or Master's degree and have strong quantitative and programming skills. Candidates with research experience are strongly preferred, especially those with programming experience in Stata, Matlab, R, and Python. Candidates would ideally begin around June 1, 2023, and work for two years before applying to graduate school in Economics or another social science.
