Job Description

Position Summary

At Stony Brook Medicine the Mechanical Engineer shall provide engineering design and project management services for design of new facilities and alterations to existing facilities. Services include identification and diagnosis of existing system conditions, design solution and preparation of construction documents including confirmation the constructed design remedied the problem. When working with external design consultants, services include participation in planning, review of design and final construction documents and inspection of completed work to ensure the work meets the specifications.

The incumbent shall be able to prepare design documents which include, but are not limited to medical gases distribution systems, heat and hot water supply distribution systems, design of temperature and humidity control systems, design of plumbing and piping systems, design of fire sprinkler & Ansul fire suppression systems, mechanical components of HVAC systems including duct work, and other mechanical apparatus normally found in mechanical distribution and control systems of Hospitals, research labs and offices.

The incumbent must have skills in program development, project management and shall insure project programs are conducted within project schedule and budget.

On projects requiring the services of an outside Engineering service, the incumbent will work with procurement to obtain professional services through RFP / RFQ's and subsequently manage respective contracts and respective project coordination.

The incumbent shall work closely with Fire Safety, Environmental Health and Safety, Physical plant, the hospital community and outside consultants/contractors.

Duties of a Mechanical Engineer may include, but are not limited to:

  • Incumbent shall consult with Hospital administration, physicians and clinical staff to assist in strategic planning for additions or renovations of hospital space that will improve quality and efficiency of patient care services.
  • Incumbent shall provide technical advice to Hospital and Physical Plant staff concerning design / redesign, project feasibility, cost estimates and code compliance.
  • Incumbent shall be competent and able to analyze and assess corrective measure or connectivity to new work, from written and drawn documentation and/or from on-site observations.
  • Incumbent shall be able to analyze components of existing HVAC systems including conducting air volume studies at existing diffusers.
  • Incumbent shall be able to prepare air balancing reports of completed projects and balancing of existing projects.
  • Incumbent shall be able to conduct studies, observations and assessments of all respective components above ceilings.
  • Incumbent shall work with Construction Estimator to develop appropriate estimates and scope of work and perform project related Value engineering where/when indicated.
  • Incumbent shall manage and oversee all phases of mechanical design, development and preparation of preliminary and construction drawings, including but not limited to, drawings, specifications and addenda, in accordance with law and applicable guidelines.
  • Incumbent shall coordinate or implement revision and adaptation of designs to meet clinical and code compliance needs. Reviews with the code compliance manager and fire safety manager to ensure design compliance with all applicable codes, rules and regulations.
  • Incumbent shall be familiar with the determination and completion of the Pre-construction Risk Assessment and Infection Control Risk Assessment as required by TJC.
  • Incumbent shall coordinate with the HAS staff including, but not limited to; Electrical and Architectural designers and draftspersons, and other support staff. Incumbent shall coordinate activities of outside design and engineering consultants related to their work.
  • The incumbent shall possess a fundamental understanding of Hospital electrical systems for coordination of project installations with the Hospital Electrical Designer and in the preparation of Construction Documents as related to mechanical system installations within the Hospital.
  • Incumbent shall assist in the selection and supervision of engineering and architectural consultants, vendors and contractors in all matters related to additions or renovations to hospital facilities.
  • Incumbent may serve as liaison between hospital and contractors / consultants and assure compliance, on the parts of contractors / consultants, with standards of quality, function, contractual terms and sound mechanical design standards.
  • Incumbent shall survey hospital environment to ensure that all construction is in compliance with hospital regulations, Department of Health codes, TJC requirements, ASHE, ASHRAE, ASTM, all applicable building codes and Facilities Guidelines Institute (FGI) Guidelines for Design and Construction of Hospital (minimum 2018 edition).
  • Incumbent shall maintain contacts with outside organizations such as government agencies, professional organizations and other institutions to aid and foster planning activities.
  • Other professional duties, as assigned.

Although a New York State PE license is not a requirement for the position, the incumbent should attend continuing education courses consistent with minimum requirements for maintenance of a New York State professional license. Courses are preferred to be consistent with medical building facilities.

Qualifications

Required: Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, or other related field. Five years directly related building systems mechanical systems design experience is required. Healthcare related experience should include involvement with clinical and administrative staff in planning; design and code compliance; presentation of preliminary drawings and prototypes; preparation/revision of drawings and construction documents; coordination and supervision of consultants and contractors; and oversight of building construction/alteration. Proficiency in the use of AutoCAD (release 14 or higher) is required.

Preferred: A Professional Engineering (P.E.) license to practice in New York State. A working knowledge of Department of Health codes, TJC requirements, ASHE, ASHRAE, ASTM, all applicable building codes and Facilities Guidelines Institute (FGI) Guidelines for Design and Construction of Hospitals is strongly preferred. LEED Accredited Professional (AP) credential is preferred. Three years mechanical engineering experience in a healthcare related facility is preferred. Some building systems electrical design experience is preferred.

Anticipated Pay Range:

The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established as - $100,000 - $125,000 / year.

The above salary range (or hiring range) represents SBUH's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

In addition, all UUP positions have an additional $3,087
