Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL), a world-renowned biomedical research organization on Long Island's North Shore in New Yor, is seeking an Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) Administrator/Coordinator to support the IACUC committee and provide regulatory/compliance support to Laboratory Animal Resources (LAR). This individual will facilitate all activities of the IACUC, including administration of the protocol review process, semi-annual facility inspection and program review, post-approval monitoring and record keeping. In addition, they will assist with writing and submitting regulatory reports, manage in-house IACUC software systems, and coordinate and facilitate all inter-institutional animal imports and exports. The IACUC Administrator/Coordinator will be integrated into the CSHL Research Compliance office and report to the Director of the Research Operations, and will work closely with the Director of the Animal Facility.

Position Responsibilities

  • Corresponding with investigators regarding protocol review processes and other IACUC related communications
  • Organizing meetings and activities associated with IACUC and LAR functions
  • Maintaining written documentation of all IACUC activities, including official meeting minutes
  • Scheduling animal facility inspections and semi-annual reviews
  • Maintaining databases of protocols and tracking animal numbers back to protocols
  • Notifying investigators when protocols are reaching maximum number of animals
  • Conducting yearly renewal of protocols
  • Coordinating and performing post-approval monitoring activities
  • Performing grant-protocol congruency assessments
  • Preparing and distributing all IACUC correspondence including semi-annual reports to the Institutional Official
  • Assisting with all Research Compliance office activities involving use of animals in research
Position Requirements

Education: A Bachelor's degree in a scientific discipline is required; Certified Professional IACUC Administrator (CPIA) certification preferred but not required.

Experience: Must have at least three years in laboratory animal research experience and two years involved with either IACUC or other regulatory/compliance related service.

  • Knowledge of laboratory animal technology and federal laws, policies, regulations and procedures governing the care and use of research animals is required.
  • Knowledge of public health service policy on humane care and use of laboratory animals, and familiarity with the guide for the care and use of laboratory animals is highly desired
  • Working knowledge of medical/research terminology and of methods and techniques in handling small animals is preferred.
  • Knowledge of USDA, New York State, AAALAC, "The Guide" and PHS policies and procedures is required.
  • Must have exceptional communication and organizational skills and the ability to work well with others, including faculty and staff.
  • Must demonstrate written and oral communication skills and the ability to initiate correspondence to investigators and produce accurate records.
  • Proficiency in PC applications, Windows and Excel is required.
  • Must be able to work with minimal supervision and pay attention to detail.
  • Ability to organize effective record keeping utilizing computer software including Word Processing, spreadsheets and database operations is essential.

The salary range for this role is $60,000-80,000. The salary range and/or hourly rate listed is a good faith determination of potential base compensation that may be offered to a successful applicant for this position at the time of this job advertisement and may be modified in the future. When determining a base salary and/or rate, several factors may be considered as applicable (e.g., years of relevant experience, education, credentials, and internal equity).
