Senior Technical Writer - General Aviation

Under limited direction, this position is responsible for leading a task for documenting and developing detailed operation, maintenance and/or troubleshooting procedures, checklists, technical specifications, service bulletins, training materials and other procedures and reports. In this role you will need to be flexible and work closely, with the DTB team of technical writers, illustrators, production, and managers. You will be tasked to ensure the team is following DTB processes and company work instructions; to consistently produce accurate, high-quality documents while working in a fast-paced environment; and be able to multi-task and work independently.


Duties and Responsibilities will include:

  • Have a proficient understanding of ATA iSpec standards and requirements and how they are used in commercial, business, and cargo aviation.
  • Ensure appropriate technical information and data is accumulated through researching and analyzing project engineering drawings, test procedures, design specifications/documentation, and software description documents.
  • Develop technical data by analyzing source data engineering data, including 3D models, engineering documentation and drawings.
  • Be able to develop description and operational procedures to support maintenance and operations, as required by the project.
  • Can determine library and database reuse of existing authored instructions and adjusting to align with specific project engineering revision.
  • Able to author from scratch leveraging experience, knowledge, and research to comprehensively author maintenance, operations, and sustainment tasks.
  • Ensure clear, concise, and accurate technical documentation is authored. Provide input, instructions, or training to the authoring team, when required, t make sure the team is adhering to the processes and specifications for each project.
  • Be able to collaborate effectively with Subject Matter Experts such as engineers, technicians, and publications personnel.
  • Strong knowledge of S1000D business rules; and how project specific technical data is developed to a project book plan or technical data development plan.
  • Actively lead or participate in team meetings and interface with illustrators and production personnel to support the development of technical documentation, as required.
  • Review, analyze, and determine impact of customer comments and redlines, and help team determine actions to resolve comments and follow through with management and/or customers.
  • Ensure assignments are completed in timely manner to facilitate on-time delivery of technical data to our customers.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement objectives to achieve delivery and quality goals.

The ideal Candidate will need:

  • Aviation mechanical, electrical, and or/technical 4-year college degree plus 4+ years of Aerospace work within avionics, electrical, and/or mechanical systems, with digital documentation or publications experience preferred OR 10+ years in Aerospace work within avionics, electrical, and/or mechanical systems, with digital documentation or publications experience preferred.
  • Able to think critically and compare source data files, including engineering drawings, reports, drawing lists, Microsoft documents, Adobe PDFs, etc.to produce technical information used in technical documentation.
  • Strong knowledge, aptitude, and adaptable to using different documentation software, including some or all the following: MS Word, Adobe FrameMaker, Arbortext Editor, and/or Oxygen.
  • Able to interpret installation drawings to author and determine illustrations required to support maintenance procedures, system tasks, data modules, page blocks, and/or figures and diagrams, as required.
  • Be consistent and clear in written and verbal communication skills and be adaptive to dynamic working environment.
  • Disciplined to work remotely, with the ability to multitask and switch priorities based on customer and team requirements.
  • Organized, dependable, and have a positive attitude and ability to work independently or in a team.
  • Provide real-time status reporting of assignments.
  • Strong working knowledge of ATA and S1000D Specifications and how they are used in aviation.
  • Knowledge and ability to work with XML or SGML is a plus.
  • Ability to follow established specifications that adhere to the unique requirements for specific customers, programs, and project requirements.
  • Able to work overtime, as required.
