Job Description

The National Center for Disaster Preparedness (NCDP) in the Climate School of Columbia University in the City of New York, invites applications for a Staff Associate III positon. The Staff Associate III will utilize analytical skills in support of complex problems, with limited supervision. They will provide independent judgement in support of research activities related to disaster preparedness and response efforts within the NCDP. Reporting to the Director of NCDP, this position will:

  • Lead literature reviews of disaster related research, translate scientific information into policy actions and recommendations related to disaster readiness and response domestically and internationally.
  • Develop work products that include articles and/or presentations.
  • Support the development of tools and resources for policy and practice stakeholders such as trainings, planning checklists, marginalized community considerations, etc.
  • Manage schedules, under PI direction, in support of meeting deadlines.
  • Act as a resource for new team members in support of research tasks and project deadlines.

This position will also support the Director of NCDP in establishing priorities for policy advocacy, and support efforts to link the evidence-base to external communication related to disaster preparedness, response and recovery.

Duties and Responsbilities also include:

  • Research scientific literature on disaster preparedness, response and recovery issues, as well as gray literature and media reports, and policy actions.
  • Lead analysis to translate research into presentations, articles and talking points for the Director of NCDP based on research conducted.
  • Support project efforts for other disaster projects and initiatives as assigned.
  • Provide guidance and directions for new research staff on assigned projects, and necessary reseach approaches.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Public Health, Public Policy and related field and at least 4-6 years of experience. A Master's degree in Public Health, Public Policy, or related field is preferred and may substitute up to 2 years of experience.
  • Knowledge of disaster risk management and understanding of how functions inter-relate and support the broader field of disasters research.
  • Experience working in a disaster or humanitarian setting.
  • Strong writing and presentation skills.
  • Ability to work under tight deadlines and with rapidly shifting priorities.
  • Experience drafting research summaries for public articles or presentation is preferred.

The search will remain open for at least 30 days after the ad appears and will remain open until the position is filled.

Appointments are made of a fiscal year basis and are eligible for renewal each July 1st, contingent upon performance and funding.
