Job Description


POSITION DESCRIPTION:

The Instrumentation Department Senior Analyst performs analysis using mainly HPLC, LC-MS, GC, GC-MS and other techniques, as appropriate, and provides leadership in the department. The Senior Analyst develops and validates instrument methods and transfer them into the production analysis environment. The Senior Analyst keeps up to date with evolving methodology and technology and is highly knowledgeable about the operation and maintenance of the instruments used in the department. Areas of testing focus for the Senior Analyst include pesticide residues, antibiotic residues, and import detention work.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Establishes conditions for the successful operation of the Laboratory.
  • Implements and validates published methods for use in the laboratory.
  • Prepares detailed reports on status of current projects.
  • Performs regular analysis in a timely fashion maintaining a high level of quality.
  • Maintains careful records of experimental observations in a notebook, in a manner suitable for efficient and complete transfer of information and protection of the laboratory's intellectual property rights.
  • Develops, validates, and performs non-routine analysis, as required.
  • Provides technical guidance and consultation to other analytical personnel.
  • Contributes technical expertise and judgment towards improvement of all analytical procedures, including new work.
  • Proactively contributes to technical and strategic discussions and development regarding equipment, methods and science.
  • Participates in relevant ISO QA/QC activities and documentation thereof.
  • Develops contacts with outside researchers that further the laboratory's objectives.
  • Maintains a safe and clean work area, complying with corporate safety and environmental policies.
  • Participates in training programs deemed necessary to either develop job skills and laboratory capabilities or meet company policies and directives.
  • Other duties as required.

POSITION OBJECTIVES

  • Adopts and integrates appropriate technologies in the laboratory.
  • Using appropriate methods, compendial and internal, performs analysis on routine samples.
  • Proactively evaluates applicability of existing methods to non-routine samples/analysis.
  • Identifies candidate methods and adapts them, when needed, for non-routine samples/analysis.
  • Continuously develops and enhances laboratory capability in the area of residue analysis.
  • Identifies candidate methods and adapts them, when needed, for non-routine samples/analysis.
  • Effectively participates in proficiency testing as required by accrediting/certifying bodies.
  • Maintains analytical and quality records as required for accreditation/certification and general maintenance of quality.
  • Actively identifies opportunities/mechanisms for advancing technical education and knowledge.
  • Plans and performs work to meet deadlines and expected turn-around times.
  • Performs routine diagnosis, troubleshooting, and maintenance of equipment.
  • Develops and maintains enough knowledge of other departmental instruments and other techniques to help cover and contribute in other areas of the Instrumentation Department.
  • Works effectively with other departments.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

  • B.S degree in the Science (M.S. degree preferred).
  • Proficiency and at least 5-year experience in analytical chemistry analysis.
  • Proven ability to develop and validate methods.
  • High level of computer skills and familiarity with instrument control/data acquisition software.
  • Thorough familiarity with literature in chemistry analysis, including primary literature.
  • Strong trouble-shooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Manual dexterity.
  • Ability to distinguish colors.
  • Ability to stand for prolonged periods.
