The Naval Nuclear Laboratory (NNL) Building & Fire Protection Engineering (BFPE) unit at the Kenneth A. Kesselring Site in Ballston Spa, NY is seeking a highly motivated Fire Protection Engineer.


The BFPE unit is responsible for the site building code enforcement and fire protection program. They provide the engineering resource to support operation, maintenance and system reliability of the sites fire protection systems as well as building code compliance for new construction and building modifications. As part of this role the selected candidate may perform review of building modifications/new construction design for code compliance and system compatibility and provide technical support through system acceptance and building occupancy. In addition, the Engineer will identify and analyze fire hazards, oversee proper installation and maintenance of fire detection, fire suppression, and fire communication systems, and train and obtain qualifications in the analysis of fire hazards, mitigation of fire damage through proper facility design, and installation/maintenance of fire systems.

*All positions at the Kesselring Site includes participation in the Site's Emergency Response Organization.

Required Combination of Knowledge and Skill

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in engineering or science related field; or Master's degree from an accredited college or university in engineering or science related field.

Preferred Skills
  • Experience with the design or maintenance of one or more fire protection systems, such as: Detection and notification systems, Water-based suppression systems, Chemical or gaseous suppression systems for special hazards, or Passive barriers and means of egress
  • Experience with the development of engineering documents (e.g. engineering analysis, technical specifications, functional requirements, cost estimates, maintenance requirements, engineering drawings, etc.)
  • Familiarity interpreting regulatory codes and standards such as International Building Code or International Fire Code, Building or Fire Code of New York State, or National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) codes, such as National Electrical Code

Pay Range
$61,000 - $93,400 annually
