Microbiology and Immunology Technician III - CVM

The Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine is seeking a Technician III to join the Microbiology and Immunology department. The Technician III will report to Dr. Gary Whittaker. They will perform organizational tasks for the lab as well as performing experiments in association with other lab members. These include managing and processing clinical samples from cats, including from animal shelters, hospitals, and veterinary clinics. Experimental duties may include tissue and cell culture, RNA and DNA isolation, and serological assays. Additional duties may also include PCR and viral genomic sequencing; training can be provided in this case, as needed. Clinically based animal handling experience is a plus.


Duties may also include analysis of other virus infections, and to assist other members of the lab when needed. They must be reliable, punctual, organized, detail oriented, and have excellent written and verbal communication skills.


Required Qualifications

  • Associate degree in biological sciences, or a closely related field, and two years of relevant laboratory experience, equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Experience with handling clinical samples and performing "wet-lab" experiments in the areas outlined above
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills; ability to identify and troubleshoot problems
  • Ability to handle sensitive, confidential information with tact and discretion
  • Ability to push, pull, lift, or carry up to 20 pounds

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in cell or molecular biology
  • Advanced knowledge of cell cultures, immunology, handling of infectious samples
  • Animal husbandry and animal handling experience
  • Licensed veterinary technician or equivalent would be a plus
  • Ability to cultivate and develop inclusive and equitable working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community members.

  • This is a full-time one year term position with potential for extension contingent upon funding and performance
