Position Summary: Children's Aid runs an overnight respite program in Chappaqua, NY that serves children and teens ages 7-17 with developmental disabilities. Participants come from Manhattan, the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens and Westchester. They come to the camp for overnights offered on weekends and holiday weeks during the year, and one week in August. The camp provides 24 hour child care and activities while they are in residence for 32-34 days/year. The position requires work at the camp facility, home and school visits in Manhattan, the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, and Westchester County, and travel to conduct recruitment for participants and staff.

The Program Director is responsible to administrate all aspects of this site-based respite program: designing and implementing activities for the participants; supervising staff; recruiting new participants and conducting intakes; recruiting and training staff; participating in annual audits; liaising with Office of People with Developmental Disabilities. (OPWDD). The Program Director works each respite program on weekends and during holiday weeks.

Responsibilities: The Program Director is responsible to fulfill the following duties.

  • Plan and implement the Camp Activity Schedule: 7 hours of activities/day
  • Inspect cabins to insure the child care procedures are being carried out.
  • Schedule staff for each program to insure adequate staffing: cabins, nurses, and kitchen staff.
  • Supervise staff during activities to insure proper camper supervision
  • Assist staff in dealing with difficult and idiosyncratic camper behavior
  • Review Logs Daily and Progress Notes
  • Review all Body Check logs at the beginning and end of each program
  • Document Services for Medicaid Billing
  • Enforce camp policies and procedures
  • Recruit new staff.
  • Plan and implement orientation and training for all staff.
  • Supervise and organize the arrival and departure procedures of our campers at the Milbank Center.
  • Manage and conduct all intakes for the program and work with the Respite Administrative Assistant to maintain participant files.
    • Use Web Applications for Intake (Choices) and communicate with Care Coordinators regarding participant services.
    • Interact with the OPWDD regarding reports, visits
    • Fulfill job activities not listed here important to the success of the camp.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • BA in Human Services or related field
  • 4 years' experience in working with children and teens
  • 2 years' experience in program management and supervision
  • Must have a valid Driver's License

Key Competencies

  • Computer skills related to online applications, e-mail, & Microsoft Suite of Applications
  • Bilingual Spanish
  • Experience with special needs children and youth preferred.
