Job Description

Summary:

The Child Mind Institute is seeking a highly skilled and motivated teacher to join our team for our Summer Program for children ages 5 through 10 who have Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Oppositional-Defiant Disorder, and related learning, social, and behavior problems. The Program is offered as a four-week immersive summer session each year. Teachers for this program are trained to use empirically-supported behavior management techniques to work with children with disruptive behavior concerns, encouraging them to engage in positive and pro-social behavior as they interact with other children and adults. Children spend 90 minutes daily in learning centers conducted by special education teachers and the remainder of each day participating in recreationally-based group activities.

Reporting directly to the director of the program, this is a non-exempt, full-time position located in Manhattan (additional information regarding location will be provided at interview and before positions are officially accepted).

Responsibilities:

  • Teaching five 60-minute learning center blocks each day, rotating through reading, writing, and math activities with built-in snack and movement breaks.
  • Primarily responsible for the learning needs of two classrooms, made up of 8-9 age-matched children with a range of learning, social, and behavioral needs.
  • Preparing lesson plans and collaborating with other program teacher to develop activities focused on team building, practice with partner work and taking turns, and presenting to the group.
  • Using special education strategies to assist children with learning tasks.
  • Participating in regular structured assessment to ensure programming is running properly.
  • Leading a 10-minute parent teacher conference for each child during the final week of the program, along with a clinical staff member.
  • Preparing a brief report card for each child to summarize growth and ongoing learning needs at the conclusion of the program.
  • Supporting counselors throughout the day, under the supervision of lead staff.
  • Chaperoning and providing additional group support on Friday field trip days.
  • Reviewing treatment and school records to maximize treatment gains.

Qualifications:

  • Candidate must be certified by the State of New York and have 3 or more years of experience.
  • Experience with elementary age students with special emphasis on special education preferred.
  • Experience in mental health programs preferred.
  • Experience leading groups in summer camps, after-school, sports, daycare, or educational programs.
  • Eagerness to learn and adapt; ability to accept and utilize constructive feedback.
  • Teachers are required to attend each day of the program and some of the trainings. The training will be held on Tuesday, June 25th through Wednesday, July 3rd. The program runs from Monday, July 8th through Friday, August 2nd, 2024. The hours are 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday through Friday. Training and all program days will be located in Manhattan with additional details to follow.

The salary range for the position is posted. Factors such as candidate's work experience, education/training, job-related skills, internal peer equity, as well as market and business considerations affect the salary offered within this range. In addition, this salary may be subject to a geographic adjustment (according to a specific city and state and depending on the role), if an authorization is granted to work outside of the location listed in this posting.
