Job Summary:

The James A. Cannavino Library at Marist College is seeking a Public and Research Services Librarian. This position has three basic components: 1) To assist in providing public services to faculty and students; 2) To provide research services to faculty and students; and 3) To serve as a Library Liaison to academic departments.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Library Science or Library and Information Science
  • 1- 3 years of related work experience

Essential Functions:

Provide Public Services:
  • Facilitate access to library materials and resources including books, reserve items, audio visual materials, laptop computers, and collaborative rooms.
  • Participate in the formulation and implementation of Public Services policies, procedures and workflows. Monitor policies, procedures and workflows and makes recommendations for improvements.
  • Monitor building use activity.
  • Assess building problems and refer to appropriate parties for a solution.
  • Maintain accurate calendar and schedule information.
  • Participate in the training, mentoring, and supervision of Library Student Assistants.
Assist patrons with research needs:
  • Assist patrons with reference queries in person, over the phone and chat, and by email.
  • Instruct patrons in use of library resources and online library system.
  • Conduct online and other database searches.
  • Direct patrons to appropriate service points.
  • Participate in Inerlibrary Loan activity.
Information Literacy Instruction:
  • Schedule sessions with faculty to develop Pathfinders and provide other requested services.
  • Develop course and subject-specific information literacy tools such as LibGuides, activities, and handouts.
  • Design and present library instruction sessions for liaison areas, Writing for College courses, first-year seminars and student and staff orientations.
  • Instruct faculty, students, and staff in the use of Library information materials, resources, and services.
  • Assist faculty in assignment development.

Serve as faculty liaison to assigned department(s):

  • In capacity of faculty liaison, coordinate the selection of materials primarily in support of the undergraduate and graduate curriculum and secondarily for faculty research needs. Consult with faculty on the management of library materials
  • Communicate with faculty on publishing trends, availability, and processing cycles.
  • Respond to research queries and needs from students and faculty within the department.
  • Review the current literature and make selection sources available to faculty.
  • Collaborate with other support units and departments on projects and initiatives.
Participate in the professional work of the Library:
  • Participate with the other librarians in maintaining a balanced collection policy and effective budget allocation process under the direction of the Budget and Resource Management Librarian.
  • Assist in the discussion and formulation of library policies and procedures and in problem resolution.
  • Cooperate with other librarians to provide service and assistance according to library objectives.
Monitor developments in librarianship and higher education through:
  • Attendance at meetings and workshops.
  • Membership in professional associations.
  • Reading of professional literature.

    • College pays 100% tuition only.
    • Eligible dependents may be Reimbursed up to $2,000 per semester towards tuition at another accredited institution.
