Job Description Summary
Provides leadership for and oversees the operation of the universities technology infrastructure, ensuring that the environment is strategically designed and secured, as well as effectively maintained, monitored and enhanced. Demonstrates a deep technical understanding of Nazareth's network, server, storage, voice, and endpoint components, and ensures that the campus infrastructure is functioning in a manner that meets or exceeds the needs of the faculty, staff and students. Identifies new strategic opportunities, introduces new technical solutions, establishes standards, develops project plans, and recommends investment priorities to meet the strategic goals of the University while considering available financial resources. Plans and implements the short and long-term infrastructure initiatives outlined in the Nazareth University Strategic Enterprise Technology Plan (STEP).

Managing a team of engineers and technicians, the Director plans and manages a portfolio of mission critical infrastructure systems including wired and wireless network; internet connectivity; virtual/physical server and storage environment; e-mail; desktop hardware, software, and communication tools; and voice communication technology. Also responsible for data center planning and management, network documentation, monitoring and advanced support of the file server and end-user computing environment.

Provides insight and recommendations for innovative uses of emerging technologies on campus e.g. Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, Artificial Intelligence / Robotics, etc.).
Essential Functions
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES (Essential Functions):
  • Provides vision and hands-on technical leadership for the design, installation, upgrade and enhancement of Nazareth's core infrastructure and communication systems (data, voice, video), including the short- and long-term infrastructure initiatives outlined in the Strategic Technology Enterprise Plan. Recommends and implements technologies and standards that best align with the University's strategic goals and available human and financial resources. 45%
  • Manages staff (team of approximately 4-5): Authority to hire, set goals and objectives, coach, mentor, develop, train, motivate and to manage performance including discipline and dismissal. Manages staff to assure accountability and stewardship of campus resources (operational, financial, technology and human) in compliance with departmental goals and objectives and following all policies and procedures. 15%
  • Maintains in-depth understanding of the University's technical architecture, including the wired and wireless network; internet connectivity; virtual/physical server and storage environment; e-mail; desktop hardware, software and communication tools; voice communication technology; the campus-wide printing environment; ticketing, monitoring and deployment tools. 10%
  • Stays informed of new technology developments and recommends ways in which the campus could benefit from the implementation of such technologies. Provides strategic insight and recommendations for innovative uses of emerging technologies (e.g., Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, Artificial Intelligence / Robotics, etc.) in Maker Space and other campus environments. 10%
  • Ensures that all production system platforms meet or exceed established performance levels, including availability, on-going maintenance, upgrades, and enhancements - with particular emphasis on mission-critical enterprise systems and applications. 5%
  • Prepares annual plans and budget estimates for infrastructure projects and technology refreshes, including projects that may have single or multi-year implementation schedules. 5%
  • Maintains relationships with external vendors and interacts with them to ensure effective resolution of operational issues. 2%
  • Oversees and facilitates the IT Change Management process. 2%

ADDITIONAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:
  • Partners with the Technology & Media Service Desk Manager to ensure the provision of superior customer service in a collaborative, collegial and team-oriented environment, as well as the provision of accurate and timely operational metrics and communication to the Chief Information Officer and the campus. Jointly responsible for inventory asset management with the Technology & Media Service Desk Manager, to ensure consistent and accurate physical inventory records are maintained throughout the technology asset lifecycle. 2%
  • Collaborates with the Chief Information Officer and other ITS Managers to develop the IT Policy Framework and to formulate specific policies and standards related to infrastructure. 2%
  • Works with key team leaders to develop and enhance the project planning and budgeting process for IT initiatives. Attends meetings with various campus groups and Senior Administrators to develop a clear understanding and assessment of technology needs 2%

Required Education, Experience, Technology Applications and Skills
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field.
  • Must have a progressive track record of managing technical staff, technical infrastructure, complex projects, budgets and vendor relations.
  • At least 12+ years' directly relevant experience, including 7+ years of progressive management experience in a technology services environment and 12+ years of experience of software, hardware architecture/design including multi-tiered architectures, network and performance optimization
  • Experience in the following areas is essential: supervisory skills, staff management, staff development and coaching, budget development, project management, vendor management
  • Exceptional organizational skills and be able to attend to and prioritize projects.
  • Ability to successfully manage interpersonal working relationships. As appropriate, collaborate with staff in other units and divisions to achieve the goals of the University.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Handles confidential information sensitively and appropriately.

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES:
  • Must demonstrate advanced competency level and/or aptitude pertaining to each essential function outlined, including:
    Experience in LAN and WAN technologies, network design, network management etc. including demonstrated understanding of the OSI 7 Layer Model.
    Experience with Data Center design.
    Experience in personal computer operating systems (imaging, desktop
    deployments and replacements).
    Experience with the Altiris Client Management Suite of applications (or similar), physical and virtual server management, Enterasys/Extreme Networks) or equivalent) wired & wireless technology (with demonstrated aptitude to quickly learn new tools/environments).
    Experience with Windows and Apple desktop and server operating systems, SAN technology, Active Directory, SQL servers, virtual server technology and backup and retrieval applications.
    Experience with fault tolerance systems and disaster recovery plans.
    Experience working in a multi-platform and multi-device environment including
    but not limited to PCs, Macs, tablets, interactive white boards, networked and standalone copiers and printers, projectors, personal computing devices (e.g. smartphones, iPads, etc.)

Preferred Education, Experience, Technology Applications and Skills
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Master's Degree is preferred but not required.
  • Additional technical certifications (e.g. CCNA; CCNP; ITIL; MCSE) are a plus.
  • RFP/RFQ writing and reviewing, creating statements of work, defining project scope definitions, performing bid reviews and acceptance, negotiating contracts for maintenance and service are a plus.

Physical Requirements
  • Must be able to work in a typical office environment that requires some lifting (30 lbs), sitting for extended periods, working at a computer and navigating the campus for various events.
