The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Position Summary

Provides direction and leadership for the CUIMC faculty programs services team, and strategic initiatives, with a focus on educational goals of the CUIMC campus. Reporting to the Executive Director, the Director oversees the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) programs and services for faculty and graduate students at Columbia University Irving Medical Center (CUIMC). The Director seeks out new ideas and opportunities and develops programs that are timely and effective for the needs of the CUIMC campus. This position supervises a team of professional educational development professionals and other staff assigned to CUIMC office, and provides leadership to jointly develop and align programs and services with the CTL directors on the Morningside Campus. The Director participates in, contributes to and exercises influence on important committees that shape the curriculum planning for the CUIMC. The position sets expectations for standards of service and quality of programs and projects and ensures that projects are completed in accordance with established educational goals.

Responsibilities

  • Plans and provides direction and leadership for CUIMC programs, services, and strategic initiatives, with a focus on educational goals of the CUIMC campus. Sets and models expectations for standards of service and quality of programs and projects. Ensures that projects are completed in accordance with established educational goals, and that all programs and services are based on current learning research and best practices in educational development; coordinates these efforts with the Director of Faculty Programs and Services (Morningside campus).
  • Partners with the Executive Director and other CTL leadership to explore opportunities that extend the reach of the CTL by collaborating with faculty, centers, and institutes on the CUIMC campus. Serves at a focal point for contact with CUIMC leadership to broaden outreach efforts; orchestrates high-level presentations and promotes a strong communications campaigns. Develops long-term relationships with key stakeholders.
  • Recruits and supervises CUIMC staff including an associate director, assistant director, and a team of learning designers; establishes strategic goals for the team. Provides overall direction to staff on teaching and learning issues. Provides overall direction to staff on education and assessment issues, including planning professional development programs. Ensures adherence to the research-based practices by the staff. Ensures the development of documentation for best practices and faculty guides. Encourages and plans targeted journal and conference participation.
  • Participates and advises committees, in alignment with institutional priorities, to shape the current and future landscape of teaching and learning at CUIMC.
  • Works with the Associate Director of Assessment on capturing appropriate data for measuring program impact. Contributes to the work of the CTL internally (such as processes, staff professional development, ongoing assessment, priority initiatives, and collaborations) and externally (through outreach, and representing the CTL at on-campus and off-campus venues).
  • Collaborates with Morningside campus director regarding RFP process, including overseeing grant proposal administration, identifying potential opportunities for faculty innovation, and facilitating the assignment of CTL in-kind support for funded projects.
  • Engages with various forms of teaching and learning literature; considers trends, and experiments with innovations in faculty and educational development. Encourages and plans targeted journal and conference participation.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree and a minimum of 7 to 9 years of related experience; advanced degree highly desirable.
  • University teaching experience and well-developed teaching, research, and assessment skills; knowledge of the literature and research on teaching and learning, higher education, and academic leadership.
  • Experience in designing, facilitating, evaluating faculty development programs and collaborating effectively with administrators, academic units, faculty, staff, and other partners.
  • Significant experience providing faculty consultations, teaching support programming, and teaching observations.
  • Demonstrated leadership and management skills, with emphasis on motivational acumen leading to innovation. Ability to manage technical staff.
  • Strong technical background, including in-depth knowledge of web technologies and applications as they are applied educational environments.
  • Record of active participation in, and contribution to national and/or international professional organizations in teaching and learning.
  • Experience recruiting and managing a team of full-time employees with a variety of backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusivity in the higher education environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

PhD or equivalent. Prior experience in a teaching center at a major research university.
