Job Description

The Department of Medicine, Division of Clinical Immunology seeks a Nurse Practitioner to provide clinical care, including evaluation, long-term management, and comprehensive care of patients in the Primary Immunodeficiency Center. This includes history and physical exam; performing and interpreting diagnostic tests; reviewing records prior and after the clinic visit; coordination of care; making referrals as indicated; monitoring patients while on therapy.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Assist in the evaluation and management of patients in the clinic and hospital setting with penicillin or other drug allergies, including allergy skin testing. Work on becoming an essential member of a drug allergy screening program.
  • Performs phlebotomy as necessary and obtains blood specimens for blood tests.
  • Assist in the evaluation and management of patients with allergic disorders.
  • Assist in building and monitoring patient's database, including patient serum samples, data collection, electronic database.
  • Receives and triages clinically related phone calls, intervenes appropriately with modifications to doctors and patients as needed.
  • Perform procedures in the Allergy clinic, such as allergy skin testing, allergy immunotherapy, pulmonary function testing.
  • With a strong focus on quality and patient satisfaction, lead and participate in patient safety and quality improvement interventions, protocol and policy development, education of other providers in best practices for management of Allergy/Immunology conditions.
  • Document clinic notes and other pertinent data that are necessary in the care of the patient. Provide information and communicate as needed with referring physicians.
  • Coordinate and act as a sub-investigator in clinical trials. This includes preparing and submitting forms to the IRB, enrolling patients into studies by completing health assessment and physical examinations, reviewing lab work and diagnostic tests and making changes as indicated by lab results while following the protocol. This also includes potentially discontinuing a patient on a study for reasons of non-compliance or other issues.
  • Attend clinic meetings and other meetings with program leadership.

  • Is generous in assisting and supporting others. Sensitive to the interrelationship of both people and functions within the department. Responsible for helping with the quarterly newsletter.
  • Operates personal computer to access email, computerized scheduling and documentation databases, and other basic office support software.
  • Successfully completes all necessary training courses and other applicable clinical software systems. Completes all required HIPAA and other specified online training courses.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Master's Degree in Nursing, Registered Nurse license and certified as a Nurse Practitioner. Must be licensed as NP in State of Maryland or other state where practicing.
  • Additional experience may substitute for master's degree, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Continued Minimum Qualifications:

  • Current American Heart Association or American Red Cross CPR certification required.
  • Must maintain current licensure and certification during duration of employment.
  • Completion of the JHUBayview Cinical Immunology in SOM credentialing process is required prior to start date.

Physical Requirements:

Sitting, standing and walking for extended period. Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction. Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s). Ability to move standard equipment through a hospital or clinical environment
